Erweiterung Hahnenburgtor

Zur Erweiterung der geschichtlich bedeutenden Hahnentorburg in Köln wird ein massiver, aus drei zylinderförmigen Volumen bestehender Baukörper nördlich des Bestandes gesetzt. Die Positionierung des Solitärs schafft einen zusammenhängenden Freiraum und stärkt den Platz. Das geschlossene, kompakte Volumen besticht durch einen kraftvollen Ausdruck und klare Präsenz, lässt der Hahnentorburg aber genügend Raum. Sowohl volumetrisch wie auch im Grundriss wird der Erweiterungsbau von der Turmgeometrie ausgehend entwickelt. Auf die Massivität und Schichtung des Mauerwerks aus verschiedenen Epochen sowie die Reliefthematik Bezug nehmend, ist das äussere Erscheinungsbild durch einen eigenwilligen und starken Ausdruck des Stampflehms geprägt. Hierbei rhythmisieren horizontale Betonlagen sowie die einzelnen Lehmschichten als direktes Abbild des Stampfverfahrens den Bau. Das scheinbar fensterlose Volumen öffnet sich im Erdgeschoss dreimal: Zwei durch Schiebeelemente gekennzeichnete Eingänge an der Ost- und Westseite formulieren einen fliessenden Übergang zum öffentlichen Aussenraum, die dritte Öffnung führt zur Treppe auf die Dachterrasse und die Bar im Obergeschoss. Die drei Ebenen der Dachlandschaft bieten Aussichtspunkte auf den Rudolfplatz und die Stadt.

The historically significant Hahnen Gate in Cologne will be expanded by a massive structure consisting of three cylinders north of the building. The position of the structure will create a contiguous space and enhance the square. The closed, compact structure will be distinguished by its impressive form and clear presence, whilst also leaving the Hahnen Gate sufficient space. The extension will be developed based on the tower’s geometry, both in terms of volume and floor plan. Bearing reference to the immensity and layering of the masonry from the different periods as well as the theme of relief, the external appearance will be characterised by the strong and distinct nature of rammed earth. Horizontal layers of concrete and individual layers of clay will directly reflect the clay construction of the building. The ostensibly windowless structure will feature three openings on the ground floor: two entrances marked by sliding elements on the east and west side will provide a continuous passage to the exterior public space; the third opening will lead to stairs up to the roof terrace and upper-floor bar. The three levels of the roof landscape will offer views over Rudolfplatz and the city.
